The Screwtape Letters is highly entertaining novel, written by Lewis was dedicated to J. R. R. Tolkien.
It is written in a satirical, epistolary style and, while it is fictional in format, the plot and characters are used to address Christian theological issues, primarily those to do with temptations that rise as thoughts and our resistance to these "forces."
As we will learn, the negative forces that enter our minds only have power in the mental plane of consciousness. If our hearts remain true to God, negative, tempting thoughts have no power at all.
Humans are amphibians - half spirit and half animal. As spirits they belong to the eternal world, but as animals they inhabit time.
~ C. S. Lewis
A book study on the Power of Thought...
Through clever humor, C. S. Lewis highlights that negative, destructive, and defeating thoughts have no real power, unless we believe such lies within our hearts.
Screwtape is a senior devil who writes these letters to his nephew Wormwood, a junior devil, who is still naïve and unskilled in the ways of temptation by causing “the patient,” an Englishman, to receive and agree to defeating thoughts.
Wormwood’s task is to draw this “patient” into damnation, away from belief in God heaven, so he can become food for “Our Father Below” – the Devil himself.
The letters cover many themes, but the underlying one is that humans are constantly being tempted, and that the devils’ ways are at work everywhere one might look. Despite this, the devils’ tactics are frequently unsuccessful, because humans have a way of overcoming their struggles and ultimately emerging on the side of God.

The book's preface offers a warning: that humans tend to fall into two main errors concerning devils. The first is disbelieving in their existence entirely. The second is believing in them so much that one becomes unhealthily obsessed. Naturally, the devils themselves are pleased about both errors.
“Real life” – an expression humans use so often without thinking about what it truly means. By “real life,” people tend to mean everyday, matters: our jobs, our family, goals, obstacles but not spiritual growth. This is what hell wants....for humans to remain distracted by immediate sensory experiences and not on God.
The Law of Undulation states that humans are constantly undulating between peaks and troughs in their lives. Their affection for their friends, their appetites, their interest in their work, and so on – all of these things alternate between periods of vibrancy and periods of numbness.
Screwtape has learned that Wormwood’s patient has made friends with a rich, middle-aged married couple. Screwtape is delighted since they are smart, superficially intellectual, and highly skeptical. What could be better? In these people’s company, the patient’s vanity can easily be preyed upon.
According to Screwtape, the modern concept of “being in love” is one of hell’s greatest successes. This idea of love leads to pride and away from maintaining a humble and compassionate heart, which is needed for successful marriage. A humble heart belongs to the enemy...God!
The background of this story takes place during World War 2. The "patient" has fallen in love with a Christian woman, which is terrible news for the depths of Hell.
Whereas Wormwood believes that the war benefits their realm, Screwtape points out in war generally turns people to God in faith and prayer.

The entertainment value of this books is priceless. As a reader, you witness the exchange of letters between Screwtape and Wormwood as they express their on-gong frustration of not being able to pull their "patient" away from God.
As devilish as they are, the tainted and defeating thoughts they attempt to infect the "patient" with do not work in their favor.
This book provides great insight for noticing our own thoughts with more diligence.
You will find great friendships and inspiration for your Spiritual Journey in our Wednesday Night SOUL Tribe gatherings. In these sessions we learn from each other, laugh with each other, share our stories, and RISE together!
